The hardness of water is primarily attributed to the presence of cations such as calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions. When raw water containing hardness passes through the resin layer of an exchanger, these calcium and magnesium ions are adsorbed by the resin, simultaneously releasing sodium ions. Consequently, the water exiting the exchanger is softened by removing the hardness ions. Once the resin reaches a certain saturation level of adsorbed calcium and magnesium ions, the hardness of the outlet water increases. At this point, the water softener automatically initiates the regeneration process of the exhausted resin according to a predetermined program. This process involves passing a concentrated sodium chloride solution (brine) through the resin, restoring its softening capability.
