Quartz sand in the reverse osmosis system primarily serves as the filtration medium in a mechanical filter. With varying particle sizes, it forms a porous structure. When raw water enters the filter, larger suspended particles such as sediment and rust are trapped on the surface and within the pores of the quartz sand layer. The filtration precision of a quartz sand filter generally ranges from 50 to 100 micrometers, effectively removing most visible impurities from the raw water and reducing its turbidity. This filtration not only occurs on the surface of the filter layer but also within the intermediate layer, where the filter materials are closely packed. As water flows through the tortuous channels within the filter materials, suspended particles have more opportunities and time to come into contact with the materials and be further trapped. The effective operation of the quartz sand filter alleviates the burden on subsequent treatment stages, ensuring the stable operation of the reverse osmosis system.
Activated carbon in the reverse osmosis system primarily serves as the adsorption medium in an adsorption filter. With a well-developed pore structure, including micropores, mesopores, and macropores, activated carbon possesses strong adsorption capabilities. When raw water passes through the activated carbon filter, the carbon adsorbs organic compounds, residual chlorine, some heavy metal ions, and color. It is particularly effective in removing odors from the water, such as the earthy smell produced by organic matter decomposition and the pungent odor caused by residual chlorine during disinfection.
