Water hardness stems primarily from the presence of calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions. When such water traverses through the resin layer of an exchanger, these ions are sequestered by the resin, with sodium ions being released in the process. This transformation yields softened water, devoid of the original hardness ions. Nevertheless, as the resin attains a critical level of adsorbed calcium and magnesium ions, the hardness of the outflowing water increases. To address this, the water softener automatically initiates a regeneration sequence, employing a concentrated sodium chloride solution (brine) to permeate the resin, thereby rejuvenating its capacity to soften water.
